Replacing an inflatable boat valve – guidance for Zodiac and RIB boats
A valve on an inflatable boat or RIB ensures the tubes remain airtight and maintain the correct pressure. If a valve is damaged, worn or leaking, this can lead to air loss and reduced boat performance. Fortunately, an inflatable boat valve can often be replaced easily without having to replace the tube or float.
On this page we explain when a valve needs replacing, how to do it, and which parts you need to replace a Zodiac valve.
When should you replace an inflatable boat valve?
Replacing a valve is usually necessary when you notice the tube slowly deflates or when the valve mechanism no longer seals properly.
Replacing a valve is recommended when:
- the tube loses air via the valve
- the valve no longer seals properly
- the valve has been damaged
- the seal or gasket is worn
- the valve cap is missing or no longer fits properly
- the valve is difficult to turn open or closed
In some cases you don’t need to replace the complete valve, and replacing a valve insert or gasket is sufficient.
How do you replace an inflatable boat valve?
Replacing a valve on many Zodiac and Bombard inflatable boats is relatively straightforward thanks to the removable valve system. For this you will usually need a special valve key.
The basic steps for replacing a valve are:
- First let all air escape completely from the tube.
- Use a valve key to carefully unscrew the valve.
- Hold the inside part of the valve so it doesn’t rotate with it.
- Remove the old valve or the damaged valve component.
- Install the new valve and tighten it firmly.
- Inflate the tube again and check that the valve seals correctly.
Always make sure you use the correct valve that is suitable for the model and year of manufacture of your inflatable boat.
Replacing the valve insert on older Zodiac valves
On some older Zodiac and Bombard inflatable boats, the full valve does not need to be replaced. In that case only the valve insert or the internal valve mechanism can be renewed.
This valve insert is mounted in the valve housing and can usually be removed with a valve key or carefully with needle-nose pliers. The new valve insert can then be installed easily in the same housing.
Do not use excessive force, as the parts are usually made of plastic. Always check whether the new valve insert is suitable for the type of valve fitted to your inflatable boat.
Which parts make up a Zodiac valve?
A valve consists of multiple parts. Depending on the issue, it may be necessary to replace a complete valve or only a specific component.
Common parts include:
- complete valves
- valve inserts
- valve housings
- valve caps
- membranes and gaskets
- valve keys
With the right component, a valve can often be repaired quickly without having to replace the entire tube.

Not sure which valve you need?
The correct valve depends on the model, year of manufacture and boat type. By checking in advance which valve is fitted in the tube, you avoid ordering the wrong part.
